An Accidental Jazz Band (AJB) was originally formed in 2011 by a number of graduates of an adult beginning band led by our Music Director, Melissa Hammer, and interested members of a variety of community concert bands and other ensembles.

The AJB consists of a full rhythm section (drums, piano, bass, and electric guitar), and horn section (alto/tenor/baritone sax, trombone, trumpet, and an intrepid clarinet player). Now led by Gunther Schulz, the band has provided instruction and rehearsal not only in the big band genre but also improvisation. The band regularly performs in a variety of venues throughout the year and is developing a solid repertoire of tunes.

We are always interested in hearing from those who would like to check us out and consider joining. If you are interested, send us an e-mail. If you are wondering if the AJB is for you and whether to contact us, most who would be comfortable playing with us would have:

  • An ability to sight-read music at a junior high school level (we can provide samples of charts for you to look at)

  • A couple of years’ experience on your instrument

  • Or a ‘comeback player’, wanting to start playing again

  • Horn players, especially trombone and trumpet

  • (Our rhythm section is established and we have no vacancies at this time)

  • Big Band or jazz experience is not essential, but a willingness to try something new is!
